Immunisations

With medical advancements making it possible for us to be safe from various diseases through vaccination, it is extremely important that we keep up to date with our vaccinations and immunisations, especially for children and the elderly.

At Providence Clinic, we provide all the immunisations on the national immunisation schedule, as well as vaccinations for cervical cancer, influenza and travel. Vaccinations for travel differ according to the country you are visiting, so make sure to ask your doctor which vaccines you should get for your travel plans.

Why is Vaccination Important?

Vaccinations can help to protect us from serious or deadly diseases caused by germs. Vaccinations work by boosting the immune system’s ability to fight certain infections. The vaccination teaches our immune system to recognise and fight specific germs so that when we are exposed to those germs, we will have a much lower risk of falling ill.

Different vaccines work best when given at certain ages. Ask our doctor to find out which vaccine is suitable at what age or for travel.

National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS)

Medisave can be used to pay for recommended vaccinations for adults aged 18 years old and above under the NAIS. Vaccines under NAIS comprises of seven types of vaccines that protect against 11 diseases, including:

(i)    Influenza;

(ii)   Pneumococcal (PCV13/PPSV23);

(iii)   Human Papillomavirus (HPV2/HPV4);

(iv)   Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap);

(v)   Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR);

(vi)   Hepatitis B; and

(vii)   Varicella.

Travel Vaccinations

Travel vaccinations differ based on the country you are visiting. For countries such as India, Cambodia and Vietnam, it is recommended travellers get vaccinations for tetanus, malaria and Hepatitis A. Routine travel vaccinations include the MMR vaccine, polio vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, chickenpox vaccine and flu vaccine. The MMR vaccine stands for Measles-Mumps-Rubella.

Other prophylactic medications for conditions such as malaria are also sometimes prescribed depending on the diseases endemic to the countries visited

Childhood vaccinations

Childhood vaccinations are important as children have weaker immune systems and are thus more susceptible to diseases. The Health Promotion Board recommends children get 12 vaccinations spaced out from birth to 17 years of age. The most common ones are the BCG vaccine, the MMR vaccine, the DTaP vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) and Hepatitis B. For the full schedule, please look at the National Immunisation Schedule. At Providence Clinic, we provide all these vaccinations so your children can remain healthy and happy.

Influenza vaccinations

Influenza vaccinations are recommended yearly for different strains of the flu based on the strains that are most likely to circulate. They stop the spread of the flu, which causes high fever, respiratory tract symptoms, myalgia and occasionally serious respiratory complications and death.. Influenza is spread by nasal secretions, coughing and sneezing, which are fairly common to encounter in everyday life, whether we are aware of it or not. Hence, the flu vaccine may be helpful especially for those with weaker immune systems such as the elderly and children, as the flu may lead to more serious health conditions.
